参考答案
Making decisions

01
Decisions

‐(Describe) The decisions young people often make?

There are several big decisions young adults need to make. The first is which high school or college to go to and that depends on the areas you are interested in learning. The second is which career they will pursue after graduation, and that often correlates with their majors. Then there are other major life decisions as well, such as where you should live, when to marry or have children, etc.

(Suggest) The decisions that children should make by themselves

I think in general, parents should let children learn to make their own decisions and be responsible for the consequences, as long as their behaviors are under control. I think parents should let children make their own decisions about things related to their own interests, such as which hobbies they want to pursue and which sports they want to play. On the other hand, children may be too young to realize the importance of being disciplined. For example, they may not choose to eat vegetables over potato chips. I think in such circumstance parents should step in to provide guidance and sometimes even “help” children to make the decision.

Making decisions

(Whether) Old people are better at making decisions

I think that depends on the types of decisions. With age we gain life experience and knowledge that are instrumental to decision making. On average, old people have more practice at making major life decisions than younger people and tend to be able to think wisely. But younger people can be better at making decisions in solving work- or task-based problems, due to the fact that they may have better cognitive abilities and problem solving skills.

(Reasons) Why some people don’t like making decisions?

There are several reasons why some people have difficulties in making decisions. Effective decision-making often involves an analysis of costs, benefits and risks. One reason some people don’t like making decisions is that they may not be able to tolerate not having the alternatives. Another reason is that some people may be overly dependent on the opinions of others, so they are often unable to make decisions for themselves.

03
Skills of making decisions

(Consider) Skills people need to make a good decision.

Making decisions, especially the bigger ones, are never easy. It takes practices and lot of other skills that are actually not easy to master. In a nutshell, some major skills someone needs to make sound decisions involve understanding the whole situation, identifying individual critical factors that affect the outcomes and being able to analyze them.

(Suggest) Ways people could improve their skills of making decisions?

In order to be able to make better decisions, people can work on developing their language skills and trying to get as much information as possible, online and offline.  Generally, the more information someone has seen, the more able they are to make good decisions. In addition, people should also develop their analytical skills so that they can enhance their abilities to break down a problem. Furthermore, I would encourage people to make more friends and improve their social skills. Friends who have our best interests at heart can offer their own knowledge and life experiences as examples to help us make better choices.

(Assess) The most important skill in making decisions.

I think some of the most important skills include framing the situation correctly, identifying critical factors as well as being able to predict possible outcomes. Without these skills, people tend to either be afraid to make decisions or be prone to make unwise or risky decisions.
