Task 1:
When your friends send a message to you, you prefer to reply right away or reply later?
Personally speaking, I prefer to give my friends response later. To be more specific, studying is the first and foremost thing that every student has to keep in mind. Social networking is also necessary but it should only be put after studying. Besides, high school students these days are really busy with their school work, like preparing for exams, doing course works and group works or finding resources for their papers, so that they have limited chances to get access to their phones. So actually, as high school students,
me and my friends could understand and we are used to delayed response.
Task 2

While both the reading and the lecture discuss the same topic about the possible functions of the dome structure of dinosaurs, the lecturer challenges the three theories presented in the reading.
First, the reading says that the dome was used for species recognition. The lecturer, however, rebuts this explanation, claiming that other dinosaur species also had the dome structure. In addition, the lecturer also points out that there were other physical features of dinosaurs that could serve this purpose of species recognition.
Second, the reading passage states that the dome could have been used for butting, citing a similar example of the big horn sheep that use this dome for fighting. In contrast, the lecture contends that the dinosaur dome was fragile, which is different from the dome of the big horn sheep. Therefore, using the dome for fighting might end up hurting the brain of the dinosaur, thus leading to the dinosaur’s death. Clearly, the lecture’s explanation contradicts the reading’ s argument.
Finally, disputing the reading’ s argument regarding the possible ornamental function of the dome, the lecturer argues that the dome structure is in fact related to the age of the dinosaur. While juveniles had not domes, adult dinosaurs had them. (201 words)
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
The most important problem affecting our society today will be solved in our lifetime.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
The most important problem(s) affecting our society today will be solved in our lifetime.
The world has witnessed dramatic progress in all spheres of life over the past few decades. A large number of people hold an optimistic attitude toward the world’s problems, confidently believing that the most significant problems can be resolved in our lifetime. While there is no universal agreement on what the single most important problem is, few would doubt that the maintenance of world peace, global warming and population-related issues are among the most important challenges facing human society, and the sad truth is that these problems are unlikely to be resolved within our lifetime. (95 words)
First of all, wars have brought destruction to the world over the past few centuries and this problem will continue to pose a threat to our lives and prosperity. Whether people fight for resources and power or fight over racial issues and religious conflicts, it seems that we are incapable of living together in harmony. A good example of this can be seen in what happened after the Second World War. We all know that the Second World War was unprecedented in terms of scale and destruction, and many people believed that this would be a constant reminder of the need to avoid repeating such tragic events. Unfortunately, however, there have been many wars and regional conflicts since World War Two and I believe that while terribly destructive world wars are unlikely, there probably will be wars and conflicts in the future. Clearly, it is difficult to get rid of the root causes of wars and it would seem an oversimplification to claim that we can avoid wars and ensure peace in our lifetime. (174 words)
Another problem that we may not be able to solve in our lifetime is global warming. An important part of tackling climate change is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but no great progress has yet been made in this regard because both individuals and governments are not ready for shifting our current way of life into one that is more environmentally friendly. Individuals tend to drive to their workplaces or schools and they feel reluctant to give up driving private cars or pay extra money for using clean sources of energy. Governments are also unwilling to cut greenhouse gas emissions when doing so may result in lowering their GDP growth rate. While there have been numerous conferences and meetings on climate change, no substantial strides have really been made. For such reasons, the trend of global warming cannot be expected to be reversed within our lifetime.(145 words)
Finally, we may not be able to solve population-related issues within the next few decades. The world’s population has been growing at an alarming rate since the Second World War, and the figure is predicted to reach 10 billion in the middle of this century. This will be an enormous challenge for human society as more food and resources will be needed to meet the massive demand of such a huge population. Furthermore, overpopulation will be compounded by population aging, which has already been a worrying social problem in countries like Japan and France. According to research findings, an aging population will probably result in workforce shortages, a heavier burden on working adults, and slower economic growth. There is no effective solution to these population-related problems and it is unlikely that they can be resolved in our lifetime.(138 words)
In summary, despite dramatic social progress over the past seven decades since World War Two, there remain a multitude of problems unsolved. It is quite likely that wars will continue to threaten us and global warming will continue to pose a threat to our planet. Also, overpopulation and population-aging will present new challenges for us. For such reasons, it will be very difficult, if not impossible, for the world’s major issues to be resolved in our lifetime. (77 words) (627 words)
