Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Good friends always make best roommates.

I do agree with the statement, because, first, when you live with your friends, you know each other, like your characteristics, or your preferences, and you may share similar interests and values, so you can hang out together, like watching films or participating parties together. There will be a lot of fun! And also, I think friends can support each other, because life could be really hard sometimes, so I think it’s good to have someone who can comfort you, like when you break up with your boyfriend. On the contrary, imagine, if you don’t get along well with your roommates, there will be a lot of conflicts and you have to tolerate each other. So I think it’s like a kind of torture if you have to see your roommate every day.

1)罐头密封性很好,铅不会进入到食物中去;

2)其他船员没有报告这个现象;

Both the reading and the listening discuss about the cause of the crew poisoning to death by the lead in canned food. The reading raises three arguments against it, while the listening holds a totally different viewpoint.

Firstly, the author mentions that lead didn’t get into food because melted lead was carefully applied to cans from the outside to seal the lids in place. However, the speaker says that the melted lead did not stay outside of the cans on ships as it was supposed to. In fact, the workers in food company didn’t have enough time to seal the lids carefully. So, the melted lead ran down the inside of the cans, contaminating the food.

Additionally, the writer demonstrates that there were no other cases about lead poisoning reported. As a matter of fact, the speaker indicates that sailors on the other ships didn’t test for lead poisoning but lead poisoning is difficult to be detected without specific tests. The reason is that symptoms of mild lead poisoning include tiredness and headaches, which are very common. Therefore, other sailors might overlook the signs and couldn’t recognize the problems.

Finally, the speaker contradicts the idea in reading by suggesting that the main purpose of the water purification systems was to provide freshwater for the ships engines instead of drinking or cooking. It is because those engines were steam engines and they must use freshwater. Moreover, there were separate supplies of freshwater on board for drinking and cooking.

It is important for government to spend money on things that are beautiful not only

It is argued that the government should place more importance on practical projects rather than on fantastic and eye-catching ones. In my opinion, these two aspects are not mutually exclusive but complementary.

There is no doubt that the government should put priority on the main sectors’ development by building more schools and hospitals. Roads are especially important due to the fact that there is a growing trend of traffic congestion in almost every metropolis. This basic infrastructure benefits the majority of people because they are practical and useful sectors that are closely related to every citizen ’ s day-to-day life. For instance, if the government would invest more fund on school education, the more children could be able to go to school; if the government would build more hospitals, it could make going to such a place more pleasant; if the government would spend more on public transports, traffic jams would ease dramatically.

When the government satisfies these basic needs of its citizens, it should consider constructing more public parks and monuments for the city which are not only aesthetically pleasing but could also boost the local economy significantly in the long term. As a result, people then have a place to hang out and relax in the parks which would be beneficial to people’ s physical health and mental well-being. In addition, it would attract more tourists flocking in the city, thus making other service industries thriving like hotels, restaurants and so on. Take Da Lian city-also called a garden city-as an example, ever since the local government placed more emphasis on its beautification, it has become a tourist hotspot which caused its GDP to skyrocket and become one of the top cities in China.

To sum up, I am convinced that the government should prioritize the basic needs of its citizens by providing more practical projects which would make the city more livable and comfortable for its residents. Then, beautifying the city also deserves attention because it can improve quality of its citizen’s life financially and mentally.
